Technology Decisions Should Have an Owner.
Your team and your providers keep the technology running. Deciding where it should go, what it should cost and which risks are worth carrying is a different responsibility. Coles Technical Group owns it.
30 minutes. No preparation. If Coles Technical Group is not the right fit, we will tell you.
Most organizations have the first two.
Someone Runs Your Technology. Who Decides If It’s Right?
Your internal team, service providers, and technology vendors can each be doing their jobs well. That still leaves a different responsibility: deciding how the environment should be designed, which risks deserve action, where technology investment is justified, and what should change next.
That is the responsibility Coles Technical Group is built to own.
Coles Technical Group provides the direction, independent judgment, and architecture connecting technology decisions to the business behind them.
Your providers operate the technology. Coles Technical Group owns the direction.
None of This Looks Like a Problem From the Inside
These patterns appear when technology outgrows informal decision making. Each one feels reasonable in isolation. Together, they set the direction by default.
Approval Without an Independent Decision
A provider recommendation becomes the decision because leadership has no independent basis for evaluating it against the business and the whole environment.
Urgency Becomes Priority
The most recent request moves first because no governing direction determines what deserves to move first.
Risk Waits for Consequence
A known risk becomes a priority only after its consequences become visible.
Continuity Replaces Evaluation
A renewal is approved because evaluating the alternatives has become harder than continuing what already exists.
Direction Set by Default Still Has a Price
Technology direction gets set either deliberately or by accumulation. The second way is not free. It is paid in three places, and none of them appear on an invoice.
You pay for it twice
Overlapping tools, renewals nobody challenged, projects that solved a symptom instead of the cause. None of it ever appears as a line item called waste.
You find out late
The risks that hurt are the ones sitting between two teams, where each assumes the other has it. They surface as an outage, an audit finding, or a client asking a question you cannot answer.
You carry it personally
Every consequential technology call ends up on your desk, because the people closest to it are deciding inside their own lane rather than across the whole environment.
Coles Technical Group Doesn’t Replace Your Technology Team. It Gives It Direction.
Your internal IT team, service providers, and vendors remain responsible for operating the environment. Coles Technical Group sets the direction and standards they operate against, giving leadership one coherent direction across the technology function.
One technology direction, carried consistently across every provider.
Two Ways to Begin
One is bounded and ends in three weeks. One is ongoing. Both start with the same conversation, and both are led directly by Kevin M. Coles.
Technology Direction Review
- ✓What we spend on technology, on what, and whether any of it overlaps
- ✓Which provider recommendations should be approved
- ✓What is most likely to break, and whether we can live with that
- ✓Which three decisions to make next, and who owns each one
Technology Governance
- ✓Approving technology spending without an independent basis for evaluating it
- ✓Renewals becoming urgent before leadership has decided whether they should continue
- ✓Technology direction emerging separately across teams and providers
- ✓Consequential decisions waiting for an outage, deadline, or crisis to force them
The Technology Direction Review stands on its own. Continuing into Technology Governance is optional. If Governance begins within 30 days of the executive working session, Coles Technical Group credits the first monthly Governance fee in full, up to $12,500. If the monthly fee exceeds $12,500, the client pays only the difference. Any unused credit does not carry forward.
Coles Technical Group also takes on select architecture engagements for major technology initiatives where independent design and technical direction are needed. These engagements are scoped separately.
Why Coles Technical Group’s Judgment Stays Independent
Four principles govern how Coles Technical Group makes technology decisions.
Built for Organizations Where the Decisions Carry Weight
Coles Technical Group is built for organizations where technology decisions carry meaningful consequence. The qualifying factor is not headcount or device count, but how much financial, regulatory, operational or competitive weight rides on those decisions being right.
Facing a Consequential Change
Modernization, technical debt, security pressure, acquisitions or major platform decisions where technology direction materially affects the outcome.
Outgrowing Informal Decisions
Technology decisions that once happened informally now carry too much weight to remain undocumented or ad hoc.
Several Providers, No Single Direction
When internal teams, service providers and vendors are all involved, Coles Technical Group establishes one direction and maintains accountability across them.
Leadership Without Technology Ownership
The technology is being operated, but no one is consistently accountable for its roadmap, standards, investments and consequential decisions.
