Coles Technical Group

COLES TECHNICAL GROUPDecisions owned, not managed.

Independent Technology Governance

What Coles Technical Group Owns, and What It Costs.

Independent ownership of technology direction, investment, risk, and provider accountability for organizations where those decisions carry real consequence.

Thirty minutes. No preparation required.

The Ownership Gap

The Technology Is Covered. These Decisions Are Not.

Operational coverage does not create executive ownership. These are the conditions that expose the gap between keeping technology running and governing where it goes.

Recommendations reach leadership without an independent decision

The proposal may be technically sound, but nobody accountable to the business has tested whether it is necessary, proportionate, or right for the whole environment.

Financial commitments precede strategic decisions

Renewals, platforms, and major investments become deadlines before leadership has decided what deserves to continue.

Authority is distributed. Accountability is not.

Internal teams and outside providers each control part of the environment, while no one owns how their decisions combine.

Risk is accepted by inertia

Known concerns remain unresolved because nobody is explicitly responsible for acting, accepting the exposure, or documenting why.

The roadmap records activity, not direction.

A credible roadmap does more than inventory projects. It defines the intended state, the sequence of decisions required to reach it, what will not be pursued, and the business reasoning that governs every investment along the way.

Two Ways to Engage

Choose the Ownership You Need.

One engagement determines the direction. The other stays accountable for what happens next.

How Engagements Begin

One Conversation. A Defensible Starting Point.

Every engagement begins by identifying the technology decisions that require clarity, direction, or ownership.

01

Identify the decisions

We discuss what is currently consequential, unclear, delayed, or sitting without an owner.

02

Choose the engagement

Begin with a Direction Review or move directly into Governance when ongoing ownership is already required.

03

Establish ownership

Coles Technical Group documents the direction, assigns decisions, and holds the technology function accountable to it.

The Result

What Changes When Direction Has an Owner.

This is not a comparison between Coles Technical Group and your providers. It is the difference between operating the technology and governing the decisions around it.

Without Ownership of Direction
When Direction Has an Owner
Recommendations are evaluated within separate functional scopes
Every recommendation is tested against the business and the whole environment
Renewals become decisions when commercial deadlines arrive
Commitments are governed before urgency limits the available choices
Risk is discussed across teams without a single record of ownership
Risk is assigned, acted upon, or deliberately accepted by an accountable owner
The roadmap reflects active projects and immediate requests
The roadmap defines an intended state and the sequence of decisions required to reach it
Technology spending is reviewed one purchase at a time
Investment is evaluated against business priority, architectural direction, and total consequence

Clear Boundaries

Direction and Operations Have Different Responsibilities.

Coles Technical Group governs the direction alongside the internal teams and providers operating the environment. When architecture or implementation support is required, Coles Technical Group may provide it through a separate scope of work.

Coles Technical Group Governance

  • ✓Definition of the intended state
  • ✓Evaluation and accountable ownership of risk
  • ✓Priority and sequence of change
  • ✓Independent review of recommendations
  • ✓Justification of technology investment

Technology Operations

  • ✓Day-to-day administration of the environment
  • ✓User support and service management
  • ✓Implementation and change execution
  • ✓Monitoring, maintenance, and continuity
  • ✓Delivery against the approved direction

Architecture Depth

Judgment Tested Against the Whole Environment.

Independent judgment is only valuable when it can withstand the architecture beneath the decision. Coles Technical Group evaluates consequences across the environment, not only inside the system or project that created the question.

Identity and Access

Authority, administrative boundaries, access policy, and the consequences created when identity decisions cross systems.

Endpoints and Mobility

Ownership, platform standards, lifecycle economics, and the device estate as part of a larger operating model.

Platforms, Data, and Cloud

Long-term commitments, integration dependencies, reversibility, and the cost created beyond the initial purchase.

Modernization and Migration

Target state, sequencing, interdependence, and maintaining architectural direction while the environment changes.

No decision is evaluated in isolation.

Questions Before You Begin

Direct Answers Before an Engagement.

Not always. Organizations with an immediate need for ongoing ownership may begin directly with Technology Governance. When the environment must first be understood and prioritized, the Technology Direction Review provides the starting point.

You retain the complete decision document and can act on it internally. Continuing with Coles Technical Group is not required.

No. Existing teams and providers continue operating the environment. Coles Technical Group owns the direction, standards, and decisions they operate against.

Implementation may be accepted under a separate scope when appropriate. The recommendation is never influenced by whether Coles Technical Group performs the work.

Technology direction cannot be governed meaningfully through occasional advice. Twelve months allows Coles Technical Group to establish standards, govern renewal cycles, and remain accountable as decisions move from planning through execution.
