Why Coles Technical Group Exists

Technology Rarely Suffers From a Lack of Activity

Organizations can have capable internal teams, service providers, vendors, projects, budgets, and recommendations all moving at once. Each can be doing exactly what it was intended to do.

Activity is not direction.

Direction requires someone to determine how decisions fit together, what the environment should become, which standards should govern it, and what deserves to change next.

Coles Technical Group was built to own that responsibility and remain accountable for the direction established.

The Standard

Judgment Before Technology

Coles Technical Group begins with the business requirement, then determines what technology, if any, deserves to follow.

Deliberate

Architecture should make the organization more deliberate, not merely more complex.

Defensible

Technology investment should trace to a defensible business need. Security and risk decisions should reflect actual consequence.

Accountable

Providers should operate against clear expectations. Major decisions and accepted risks should have identified owners.

Sometimes the right recommendation is significant change. Sometimes it is to leave something alone.

Experience

Experience Where the Decisions Carry Weight

Coles Technical Group’s standard was shaped in environments where a technology decision carried financial, regulatory, security and operational consequence, and where a wrong call was expensive to reverse.

The work included technology direction, modernization, identity and access, platform migration, security decisions, and architecture that had to hold across every one of them.

The value is not the scale of those environments. It is the discipline required to make decisions that hold across them.

Complex environments make the cost of weak architecture obvious. They also reveal something more important: sophistication is not measured by how much technology an organization owns. It is measured by how deliberately that technology is chosen, connected, governed, and changed.

Why Coles Technical Group

The Enterprise Function Without the Enterprise Layers

Large enterprises distribute technology responsibility across executive leadership, architects, security leaders, platform teams, engineers, and governance functions. Most organizations do not need to build that entire structure internally.

The responsibility does not disappear because the organizational layers do.

Architecture must still connect the environment. Standards must still govern decisions. Providers still need one direction to operate against. Leadership still needs independent judgment when the consequences matter.

Coles Technical Group provides that function directly.

The Standard Behind the Firm

Kevin M. Coles

Founder & Principal | Fractional CIO/CTO

Kevin M. Coles founded Coles Technical Group after 15 years in technology, including a decade inside complex enterprise environments where architecture and technology decisions carried financial, regulatory, security, and operational consequence.

That experience shaped the standard behind Coles Technical Group: decisions should be evaluated against the whole environment, recommendations should withstand technical and commercial scrutiny, and architecture should serve the business rather than technology itself.

Kevin remains directly involved in every Coles Technical Group engagement. Clients work with the person responsible for the judgment, the direction, and the accountability that follows. There is no handoff from a senior sales relationship to a junior delivery team.

Two ways to begin: a bounded Technology Direction Review or ongoing Technology Governance.

Independence

Independence Is Structural

Coles Technical Group does not earn commissions on the technology it recommends. The firm does not depend on hardware margin, software resale, expanded licensing, or operating the environment to make an engagement more valuable.

The commercial relationship is with the client. The recommendation follows the requirement.

Internal teams and providers remain responsible for ongoing operations. Coles Technical Group remains accountable to the independent technology direction established for the business.

The recommendation is the product.

The Direction Should Answer to the Business.
